Ramesh Vinayakam took to music at an early age. He wrote and composed his first song when he was 12 years old.
His first guru is his father, Sri. Vinayakam, who taught him not only the rudiments of composition but also inculcated the sense of aesthetics and the taste for style and substance of composition. His mother, Smt. Valli Vinayakam, who has the innate ability to set lyrics to beautiful tunes in chaste classical idiom, has always been a great inspiration for him to compose.
He learnt Carnatic music from Smt Rukmani Ramani, daughter of Shri Papanasam Sivan. He learnt Western Music from Mr Jacob John, the great Piano teacher at whose instance took to teaching as well, sending Students to Trinity College, London.
Right from his school days, he won many a prizes in various music competitions. He even composed and orchestrated pieces during his college days and during such an occasion he received an award from our late Chief Minister, Shri M G Ramachandran.
He also held the post of Secretary (Fine Arts) in his Alma mater, A M Jain College, Chennai from where he graduated.
He was brought in to the industry by legendary singer S P Balasubramaniam who sang in his first album called PRATHIDHWANI. Ramesh had also penned all the lyrics. Prathdhwani is a Raga invented by Ramesh Vinayakam and named by the great musician, Musicologist Dr. S. Ramanathan.
Introduced by Director Mouli, Ramesh Vinayakam’s first movie was in Telugu, Paila Pacheesu in the name Narendranath. After doing many films in Telugu, he scored music for the Tamil movie “Aey Nee Romba Azhaga Irukka” by Director Vasanth.
Ramesh Vinayakam is also a Poet and Lyricist, having written songs/poems in Tamil, English and Sanskrit. His kritis have been performed in the classical platforms.
As a singer, Ramesh Vinayakam has performed a number of songs for other music directors – a rare feat for any composer and has also won Filmfare Award in 2011 as the ‘Best Playback Singer’ for the song ‘Sadhasiva’ – ‘Khaleja’ for Music Director Mani Sharma.
He is also a writer, contributing for The Hindu news paper, and for the Performing Arts Magazines Sruti and Score regularly.
He has judged the music competitions/reality shows in top televisions channels.
One of the earliest colloborations for Fusion Music with Mirudangam Maestro Mr. Karaikudi Mani, and has worked with The Madras String Quartet and collaborated with musicians like Kadri Gopal Nath, Sangeev Abhayankar, Lalgudi Krishnan among others.
Ramesh Vinayakam scored music for a Hollywood movie ‘A Common Man’ starring Sir Ben Kingsley, which won Gold at Madrid, Spain and Bronze in New York Film Festival, 2013.
He recorded German Pop orchestra for the sound track of his movie RAMANUJAN.
The prestigious publication “The Cambridge Companion to Film Music” has featured an analysis of his scores of “RAMANUJAN”
“RAMANUJAN” was screened specially for the President of India, at Rashtrapathi Bhavan.
He has conducted many Lecture demonstrations and workshops inclucing the ones in the prestigious Music Academy, Krishna Gaana Sabha, Kalakshetra Foundation, University of Madras, Brahadvani, Dhruv Arts London among others.
